Ministry of Sound / Released October 2011

What does it sound like?

The world’s first superclub (or, to Manchester residents and former Hacienda regulars, the second) digging up the past to dish out one of the brand’s only releases aimed at true heads in years. Musically speaking those who remember, and people that wish they did will certainly find much to get excited about, with each mix- coming from house legends, former residents and co-founders- having been recorded back in the day.

With a staggering five discs crammed with melded black plastic it’s difficult to know where to begin, but let’s just say if you’re looking to revisit classic fare like Inner City’s Pennies From Heaven, and Chez Damier’s Can You Feel It then this is exactly the right way to do it. Perhaps what’s most engrossing is the quality of the sets at hand, which two decades on would put many a technologically advanced DJ to shame.

Where would I dance to it?

At a party full of 40-somethings who can’t quite recall the specifics of their youth. Failing that places where people aren’t too scared of straying from the path marked ‘this is what’s happening now’ for fear of realising half of today’s tunes are really just the pioneers rehashed.

What highlights can I expect to hear?

How about five mixes from Larry Levan, David Morales, Todd Terry, Kenny Carpenter, and Justin Berkmann?

Why should I pay for it?

If this release appeals in the slightest then you’re obviously pretty passionate about the scene as was, and is. With that in mind a collector’s item such as this should prove its monetary value with ease.

Where can I buy it?

Phonica.
