Around the world in 80 labels: !Organism – Yan Stricker

We head to distant lands for our next imprint expose. OK, so Switzerland might not be on the other side of the globe, but by inviting one of Europe’s foremost purveyors of techno tinged with melody and electro edges to offer some words of wisdom we’ve managed to clock up a few miles.

Launched just three years ago, !Organism has quickly established itself as one of the scene’s most reliable young labels, with work from Hans Bouffmyhre, Go!diva, and the bossman turning heads like Mistress Barbara, Oliver Lang and The Advent to name but a few.  So, how do you stand out amid a sea of stiff competition? Let’s let head honcho Yan Stricker take the podium to answer that.

!Organism (Switzerland)- Yan Stricker

Describe your imprint’s output.

!Organism is a Swiss label, created in 2008 by me; a DJ and Producer whose passion is electronic music. The label is open to different genres, from minimal through to techno, with touches of tech-house. To date about 10 EPs have been brought out, mainly produced by new talents such as Kimono, Mylo Salté, Go!Diva, Juan Baeza, and Yan Stricker, with remixes by talented artists such as Alexi Delano, Max Cooper, Sasha Carassi, Perc and Hans Bouffmyhre.

What would you say makes it different?

We obviously try to have a label with a musical identity of its own. Apart from that the difference is felt in the attention we pay to each individual release, as !Organism is a small structure that doesn’t put out that much music each year, but every track is a child of desire. Our choices are made with great attention paid to the artists and their tracks benefit from high end analogue mastering provided by a great sound engineer and a unified graphic concept (cover art, internet site, advertising banners), thanks to our talented designer, which is made to match the music.

What is it that makes you keep looking for new talent to expose?

Personally, I think that it should be the main mission of any indie label. As we are passionate about music, it is a real pleasure spending time looking around, listening to new tracks with the aim of discovering artists who correspond to our musical identity. If all goes well we are filled with pride and see an artist literally take off after producing on !Organism. We never forget that today’s new talents are, after all, tomorrow’s stars!

What’s the label’s pinnacle achievement so far?

!Organisim is still quite discrete worldwide, slowly but surely we are becoming better known. We are terribly proud of the feedback we have received for each of our releases – just knowing they are appreciated and played in clubs across the globe by artists we appreciate is quite satisfying.

If people were going to hear one release from your camp, what would you prefer it to be?

A recent release, Soak You Tease Us, is really quite a good representation of the label. The rather unknown French artist, Mylo Salté, who produced the track has real personal style and after hearing the quality of his productions we know he has the potential to become a giant!

This EP is also accompanied by 2 remixes, one of which was done by Alexi Delano, who has taken time out from his production work with Drumcode, Plus8 and H Productions to rework Tease into a rolling slice of underground techno. It’s incredible to be able to collaborate with such artists.

All being well, skip forward five years, where would you like things to be?

In five years the label will be recognised worldwide for its constant quality and will have propelled many artists into the limelight. The new !Organism Booking Agency will be placing its own artists and we will be organising mesmerising !Organism showcases throughout the world…
